Er zijn drie hoofdsoorten: platmos, bolmos en rendiermos. Platmos heeft een vlakke structuur, bolmos oogt voller en rendiermos is luchtig vertakt. Combinaties van verschillende mossoorten zijn ook mogelijk voor een levendig effect.
