The challenge
After fifteen to twenty years, the existing interior planting at the Zutphen Courthouse was ready for renewal. The original plants no longer matched the building’s appearance and had reached the end of their lifespan. The objective was to provide the interior with a fresh and well-maintained look, without altering the building’s fundamental character.
The architecture is defined by powerful materials such as concrete, steel, and stone. Therefore, the challenge lay in adding greenery that softens the interior while remaining respectful of the existing architecture and the building’s robust identity.
The plan
The starting point for the design was to create tranquility and unity within the interior. The client expressed a clear preference for the Ficus lyrata on a stem. This characterful plant serves as a recognizable element throughout the building and contributes to a calm, consistent appearance.
Additionally, we focused on the balustrades throughout the building. Integrating planters here offered a subtle way to add greenery on multiple levels without obstructing sightlines or disrupting the architecture. To maintain a sense of calm, we chose to have the balustrade planters finished in the exact same color as the railing itself. This allows the containers to become an integral part of the design, ensuring they do not dominate the space.
The execution
We placed Ficus lyrata on a stem, along with other large-leaved plants, at various strategic locations. By repeating these plant types across different areas, we created a sense of cohesion between the spaces.
For the balustrades, we installed custom planters that align perfectly with the existing interior. These containers, produced by Plantinum, meet the requirement for using sustainable materials within the project. For the planting within these balustrade containers, we intentionally chose a uniform selection. This repetition ensures a tranquil look and reinforces the serene character of the space.
The result
With the new interior planting, the Zutphen Courthouse has regained a fresh and cared-for appearance. The greenery serves as a soft counterpart to the robust materials and contributes to a more pleasant atmosphere for both employees and visitors.
The updated planting has been very well received. The interior appears calmer, fresher, and more balanced, while the original character of the building has been fully preserved.
