The challenge
Dulon College wanted to give its renovated school building a warmer and more pleasant appearance. The interior was modern and clean-lined but still lacked the natural atmosphere that fits an inspiring place to learn. The goal was to bring the interior to life with plants, while maintaining the building’s sleek design.
The plan
Since greenery was not originally included in the architect’s design, Ten Brinke was asked to create an additional planting plan. The concept focused on adding plants to all communal areas, such as the atrium, cafeteria, corridors, and staff room. By grouping the plants into so-called ‘green islands’, spaces were created where students and staff can experience greenery from every viewpoint.
When selecting the plants, special attention was given to safety and functionality. Only robust, easy-to-maintain species without thorns or sharp leaves were used, making them ideal for an educational environment.
The execution
The design includes a diverse mix of green plants at different heights, complemented by a few larger, tree-like specimens that emphasise the height of the atrium. The plants were placed in durable, high-quality polyester planters, arranged in varying colours and levels to create a playful, layered effect.
The combination of earthy tones and subtle accent colours ties in beautifully with the interior design and strengthens the identity of the school.
The result
With the addition of greenery, the renewed school building gained exactly the atmosphere Dulon College envisioned: vibrant, inviting, and pleasant to spend time in. The green islands soften the clean architectural lines and bring a natural balance between calm and energy.
Where the building once felt mainly modern and functional, it has now become a lively environment where students enjoy meeting and spending time together. The greenery completes the space, adding the finishing touch.
