The challenge

For the new Hollander Techniek building in Apeldoorn, there was a clear wish: to dress the building with interior planting that matched the look and feel of the location in Almere, but with larger green elements.

The building has a sleek and industrial character. Open spaces, lots of glass, clear sightlines, technical installations, concrete floors and strong materials form a powerful foundation. At the same time, it is an interior where greenery can add exactly the warmth and atmosphere needed to bring the space to life.

The challenge was to create a planting plan with enough impact for the scale of the building, without disrupting its openness or industrial character.

The plan

The design focuses on large statement elements in central areas of the building. Generous trees, large plants and substantial planters create a strong green foundation and immediately add character to the spaces.

The placement was carefully aligned with the architecture of the building. By taking glass walls, sightlines and views into account, the greenery becomes visible from multiple perspectives. Not only when walking past the plants, but also from other rooms and through the glass partitions.

Greenery was also added to the walls. Moss circles and round Wally’s with artificial planting bring more variety to the interior and allow greenery to be experienced at different heights. This creates a playful and lively whole, without making the space feel too busy.

The execution

Large trees and plants were placed in calm, natural planters at several central locations throughout the building. The soft tones of the planters complement the light interior, while the full green crowns create contrast with the industrial foundation.

Along the glass sections, the plants were deliberately positioned to contribute to attractive views through the building. From corridors, workspaces and meeting areas, the greenery appears again and again. As a result, the planting does not feel like separate decoration, but like an integral part of the building.

In the corridors and meeting areas, the Wally’s with artificial planting add an extra layer to the design. Their round shapes soften the clean lines of the building and subtly bring more warmth to the walls. The combination of trailing plants, leaf textures and shadow play gives the walls more depth and movement.

The moss circles also contribute to this natural look. By working with different shades of green and various sizes, a calm yet eye-catching wall decoration was created that fits well with the modern interior.

The result

Thanks to the interior planting, the new Hollander Techniek building has gained more warmth, atmosphere and experience. The large green elements match the scale of the building and form a strong contrast with the sleek, industrial environment.

Because greenery has been applied at multiple levels, a natural sense of cohesion is created throughout the building. Large plants and trees provide statement and volume, while the moss circles and Wally’s add playfulness and refinement.

The planting has been positively received and clearly enhances the atmosphere within the building. A great example of how greenery can soften, strengthen and complete a modern industrial interior.
