The challenge

For the Witteveen+Bos offices at Verzetslaan 20 and 30 in Deventer, the brief was clear: create an interior in which planting is not a separate element, but fully integrated with the architecture and character of the building.

The spaces are defined by clean lines, calm colour palettes and a well-considered layout. The challenge was to introduce greenery in a way that strengthens this balance. Not as standalone features, but as a cohesive whole in which plants, planters and interior elements complement each other.

Sustainability also played a key role within the project. The selected solutions needed not only to align aesthetically, but also support the organisation’s sustainability ambitions.

The plan

At Verzetslaan 20, a tone on tone approach was applied, ensuring that both planters and planting visually align with the interior. By carefully coordinating colours and materials, a calm and strong architectural expression is achieved.

The planting scheme consists of a combination of large specimen plants and dense group planting. Each space was assessed based on light conditions and function, ensuring every plant is positioned correctly. The guiding principle was clear: the right plant in the right planter, allowing both to enhance one another.

For Verzetslaan 30, the design follows a core range of circular planters. Sustainable solutions from Plantinum were selected, in line with the broader direction Witteveen+Bos is implementing across multiple locations.

The execution

During execution, a variety of configurations were used to respond to the building’s layout. Tall planters with strong foliage plants create vertical accents and introduce softness into the space.

Elongated planters along workstations and seating areas provide structure and help guide movement through the office. In addition, compact green islands and integrated planting were introduced, ensuring greenery is present at multiple levels.

Planting was also strategically positioned in meeting rooms and along façades. Here, plants not only contribute to the atmosphere, but also support a comfortable and balanced working environment.

Throughout the process, close collaboration with the client ensured the design was refined step by step, resulting in a final outcome that fully aligns with both the brief and the interior concept.

The result

The result is a working environment in which greenery feels like a natural part of the interior. The tone on tone application creates calm and cohesion, while variation in planting adds liveliness and depth.

The combination of specimen plants, group planting and bespoke configurations gives each space its own character, without losing overall unity. At the same time, the chosen materials and solutions align with the organisation’s sustainability ambitions.

An interior where greenery does not stand out as an addition, but functions as an enhancement of the whole. Exactly as intended.
