The challenge

The full renovation of Crematorium and Funeral Centre Zaanstad had one clear objective: to create a contemporary and sustainable space where loved ones can say goodbye in a serene environment. The spaces had to be multifunctional, with a natural appearance that aligns with PC Uitvaart’s ambition to be fully CO₂ neutral by 2030.

The plan

Architecture firm Doepel Strijkers and Madma urbanism+landscape designed a modern crematorium where biophilic design plays a prominent role. Natural materials, ample daylight and unobstructed views of the surrounding gardens contribute to a calm and connected environment. Interior landscaping was included as an essential element to enhance this experience.

The execution

A lush urban jungle style was chosen: vibrant green plants bring warmth and life into the space, while preserving its quiet, respectful character. We used sustainable materials such as circular plant containers made from Plantinum. The planting arrangements are tailored to each area, adding atmosphere and comfort to both intimate gatherings and larger ceremonies.

The result

The renovated crematorium is experienced as a peaceful and pleasant place where visitors feel at ease. The greenery contributes to the overall serenity and fully matches the design vision of PC Uitvaart. Feedback from the client has been very positive: the final result aligns with their expectations and supports the space’s purpose – offering a dignified farewell, surrounded by nature.
